Offshore vs nearshore software development

Offshore vs nearshore is a trade between overlap and cost. Nearshore means engineers in a nearby country with a time difference of up to about three hours. Offshore means engineers further away, often six hours or more apart. Nearshore gives more shared working hours and costs more. Offshore costs less and works when overlap is planned.

What does nearshore mean

Nearshore development places engineers close to your own time zone, often in the same region. A Dutch company working with a team in Poland or Portugal is a typical case. The appeal is shared working hours, similar business culture and shorter travel.

What does offshore mean

Offshore development places engineers in a distant country, usually with a large time difference. For a European company, that often means South or Southeast Asia. The appeal is a wider pool of senior engineers and lower employment costs. The challenge is that live conversation takes planning.

How do they compare

Nearshore Offshore
Time difference 0 to 3 hours Often 5 to 8 hours or more
Live overlap Most of the working day A few planned hours
Employment cost Higher Lower
Talent pool Regional Larger
Communication style Real-time by default Written first, calls by agreement
Travel Short trips Longer, planned visits

How much does time zone really matter

It matters less than most buyers expect, and more than most sellers admit. Engineering work is mostly focused solo time. What needs overlap is planning, review and unblocking. A few shared hours each day cover those, provided the team writes decisions down and keeps pull requests small.

Overlap does matter when your product changes daily, when you run incidents together or when stakeholders join stand-ups live. In those cases, count the actual shared hours and not the label on the contract.

What risks does each carry

Nearshore risks are mostly financial: you pay a premium, and the pool in one region can be thin for specialised skills. Offshore risks are mostly operational: slower feedback loops, weaker context and a higher chance that misunderstandings sit for a day before anyone notices.

Both carry legal risks that depend on the contract. In the Netherlands, for example, the DBA law affects how offshore engineers are engaged, and in the UK the IR35 rules apply to some arrangements.

How do you make offshore work

Agree the overlap window before anyone starts. Write specs and decisions in a shared place. Keep pull requests small so a reviewer can answer in one sitting. Give offshore engineers the same access and the same access to context as local ones, and put them in your stand-up instead of a separate process.

Seniority helps more than any process. Experienced engineers ask the right question before a day passes, which is what distance punishes most.

What does this look like with Miyagami

Our engineers work from Vietnam, with Da Nang as our biggest hub, and overlap with the CET afternoon. We don't claim overlap with US time zones. Account management sits in Amsterdam. Engineers join full-time from €5,600 a month with a three-month minimum, and each has gone through two sixty-minute sessions in a real codebase. The pricing page compares monthly cost with a local hire, and how long it takes to hire an offshore engineer covers the timeline.

How should you choose

Start with the hours you need together and the budget you have. If you need most of the day live, nearshore is the safer pick. If a few planned hours are enough and seniority matters more than location, offshore widens your options and lowers the monthly cost. Test the choice on a small piece of work before committing the whole roadmap.

Short answers

Is nearshore better than offshore?

Neither is better by default. Nearshore gives more live overlap at a higher cost, and offshore lowers cost with planned overlap.

How many hours of overlap do you need?

Most teams manage with three to four shared hours a day for planning, review and unblocking, if decisions are written down.

Is offshore cheaper than nearshore?

Usually yes on monthly employment cost, though coordination effort can narrow the gap if overlap is poorly planned.

Where are Miyagami's engineers based?

In Vietnam, mainly Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, with overlap in the CET afternoon.
