Helping Dutch households use less energy
Research, redesign and a cloud data platform for an energy-usage app used by residents of Dutch housing corporations.
Result
An existing app improved, extended and maintained, with a full redesign now underway with the same team.
The problem behind the brief
SlimWonen wanted to give Dutch residents a simple way to understand their energy use and make more sustainable choices. That meant an app that moved people to act on their data instead of only showing it to them.
It also needed a secure pipeline from smart meters, a platform housing corporations could trust at scale, and full ownership of the product and its data.
How we approached the build
One team covered research, design, engineering, working from the same decisions from the first assessment to launch.
Research
User research and heuristic analysis showed how residents used the original app, what motivated them and where they dropped off. That led to a product strategy built around behaviour change for different user profiles.
Design
The app got a ground-up redesign with clearer energy insights, better navigation and new flows, plus gamification through tips, challenges and a visual sustainability journey. The interface was made readable for all ages and aligned with SlimWonen's new brand.
Engineering
The team built a cloud platform that retrieves smart-meter data securely and scales across housing associations, plus a data platform for housing corporations. Documentation means SlimWonen keeps full control of its product and its users' data.

What it delivered
Engagement
An app built around habits
Tips, challenges and a visual sustainability journey give residents a reason to come back and act on their energy data.
Scale
Ready for every housing association
Smart-meter data is retrieved securely on a cloud platform that scales across housing corporations.
Ownership
SlimWonen in full control
Documentation and guidance mean SlimWonen owns and runs its product and its users' data.
“Miyagami improved the structure of an existing app, then further developed and maintained it. A complete redesign of the app is now underway.”
