What is software staff augmentation

Dale WesdorpCo-founder, Miyagami Hiring3 min read

Software staff augmentation is a way of adding external engineers to your own team. They work under your direction, in your tools and your processes, for as long as you need the capacity or the skill. You decide what they build and how, while the provider handles employment, payroll and equipment.

How does staff augmentation work

You describe the role and the skills, the provider proposes engineers, and you interview them before anyone starts. Once they join, they attend your stand-ups, use your repositories and report to your lead. The provider remains the employer, so contracts, local labour rules and benefits sit with them instead of with you.

How is it different from outsourcing

With outsourcing, a vendor takes a scope and owns delivery. They run their own process, manage their own people and hand work back. With staff augmentation, you keep the product decisions and the management, and you get more hands. Outsourcing transfers responsibility for an outcome. Augmentation adds capacity you steer yourself.

How is it different from hiring

Hiring makes someone your employee, with recruitment time, onboarding and a long-term commitment. Augmentation shortens the start and limits the commitment. Roles that define your company still belong in direct hiring, while augmentation covers peaks, new skills and teams that cannot wait through a long search.

When does it make sense

It makes sense when you already know what to build and lack people to build it. Common cases are a product with a deadline, a new technology your team has not used, a backlog that outgrew the team, or a founder who needs senior engineers without a recruiting process. It fits poorly when you have no technical lead, because someone on your side has to set direction and review work.

What are the risks

The main risks are fit, continuity and knowledge. A bad match wastes weeks, so look for a replacement policy. Engineers who leave take context with them, so insist on documented decisions and shared repositories. Integration also takes effort: an augmented engineer needs the same access, onboarding and respect as a permanent colleague.

Check the terms as well. Part-time arrangements usually mean split attention, and unclear IP clauses cause trouble later. Look for IP transfer written into the contract, and for compliance such as GDPR and ISO 27001 if you handle personal data.

What does it cost

Cost depends on seniority, location and contract length. Compare the full monthly cost of a local hire, including salary, employer taxes, recruitment and equipment, against a monthly rate with none of those extras. Our own figures for Vietnam-based engineers are in what a senior engineer costs in Vietnam, and the pricing page lays out the bands.

How Miyagami does it

We supply senior engineers who join your team full-time, from €5,600 a month, with a three-month minimum and no recruitment fee. You get a shortlist within 3 working days and can hire within 5 working days of the brief. Each candidate has been through two sixty-minute sessions in a real codebase, and you see both scorecards. If the fit is wrong, we replace the engineer at our cost. We don't do part-time. See how many engineers you need before you brief us.

Short answers

Is staff augmentation the same as outsourcing?

No. In augmentation you direct the work and own delivery. In outsourcing the vendor owns delivery.

Who is the employer in staff augmentation?

The provider. They handle contracts, payroll and equipment while you manage the work day to day.

How long does staff augmentation last?

It depends on the contract. Ours is full-time with a three-month minimum.

Do I need a technical lead to use it?

Yes. Someone on your side needs to set direction and review the work.
